Who are the founders of Brio?

Twin brothers Arnie and Ron Koss are the co-founders of Brio. While Ben and Jerry were concocting unusual ice cream flavors in the 80s, Arnie and Ron Koss revolutionized baby food by creating Earth’s Best Baby Food, the nation’s first organic baby food. Since then, Arnie and Ron have moved on to reinvent ice cream, making it from organic and natural ingredients, jam packed with amazing nutrition, but you wouldn’t know it from the irresistibly delicious taste.

What inspired Arnie and Ron Koss to reinvent ice cream to be smarter and better for you?

Like so many great stories, Brio’s story starts with Mom – in this case, Arnie and Ron’s dedicated, loving mother, Judith Koss. Her sons knew how much she loved ice cream. When Judith faced some health challenges and especially needed nourishing food, her sons thought about how ice cream could be the perfect answer, if it were only healthier and more nutrient-rich.

What were the Koss brothers’ goals for transforming ice cream?

Arnie and Ron Koss set out to transform ice cream into a healthy food choice. They had seen (and tasted) many so-called “improvements” on ice cream – ice milk made with skim milk, frozen yogurt, low fat and low sugar options, and non-dairy alternatives. The brothers found all of these concoctions fell short of what everyone wants in ice cream – rich creaminess and flavor — and besides, these options offered few nutritional advantages. Arnie and Ron focused their vision on creating an ice cream that was so rich and delicious, you’d never guess it was also smartly nutritious, unless someone let you in on the secret.

Exactly how did they create richly delicious and smartly nutritious Brio?

As a Vermonter, Ron was acquainted with some former Ben & Jerry’s flavor developers who lived in his community. Ron invited them to become part of the Brio product development team. Ron also enlisted some noted dietitians and nutritionists to join the group. Led by Ron, the team worked tirelessly to develop the combination of rich, creamy and delicious — and smartly nutritious – found uniquely in Brio.

What ingredients are used to make Brio?

The first ingredient in Brio is organic whole milk, from pasture-raised cows. Brio is naturally flavored with Madagascar vanilla, organic sea-salt caramel, cocoa, real coffee, ripe strawberries and Alphonso mango. Brio is sweetened with an all-natural patented sweetener blend that provides energy and is also low glycemic. In addition, Brio is made with a blend of organic oils, to provide a healthy balance of Omega 3-6-9s. Last but not least, Brio includes a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals that are essential for health.

What’s just as important is what’s not in Brio. No artificial flavor. No artificial colors or sweeteners. No stevia, erythritol or monk fruit. Ever!

Why did Arnie and Ron Koss decide to use organic whole milk from pasture-raised cows?

Organic whole milk is nutritious and healthy! Rich in calcium, organic whole milk is also a great source of protein and Vitamin D.

Our organic whole milk is from Organic Valley, a cooperative owned by family farmers. Organic Valley has been a leader in organic agriculture from the very beginning; their philosophy and decisions are based on the health and welfare of people, animals and the earth.

The organic milk used in Brio is produced without the use of pesticides and herbicides, and is made from cows that are not treated with antibiotics and growth hormones (such as rBST). It’s also non-GMO.

You’ll feel great knowing that the milk in Brio is from pasture-raised cows. Recent studies show that organic whole milk from pasture-raised cows is higher in Omega 3s, has a more healthful balance of essential fatty acids and more Conjugated Linolei Acid (CLA), all good news for you.

With pasture-raised cows, the major portion of the cows’ diet comes from the pasture, from the nutrient-rich grasses that they love. (In winter, when fresh grass is scarce, the cows receive some grains and hay.) Pasture-raised cows are also out in the sunshine and fresh air, much more than their barn-raised counterparts. We share Organic Valley’s view that healthy, happy cows produce more delicious, healthy milk.

Is Brio ice cream?

Brio is mixed and churned and made just like ice cream. Organic whole milk is our main ingredient.

Through careful design (and because we don’t add cream to our mix), Brio has less saturated fat and cholesterol than ordinary ice cream.

Labeling laws require any ice cream-style product with less than 10% milkfat to be labeled as “Dairy Dessert” or “Frozen Dairy Dessert” instead of “Ice Cream.” So our label says “Dairy Dessert.” But you don’t eat the label. You eat what’s inside the carton. And inside every carton of Brio is all the richness, creaminess and pure bliss that you want from ice cream, just made a whole lot more nutritious.

How does Brio compare to other super premium brands?

Before now, premium ice cream was associated with guilt; too many calories, too much fat and sugar. With Brio, all that has changed. Both richly delicious and surprisingly nutritious, Brio lets you have your ice cream, and eat it, too.

Brio is loaded with calcium, protein, omegas, antioxidants and probiotics. That’s all good stuff. Brio has 40% fewer calories and 50% less fat than other super premium ice creams, plus it’s non-GMO and certified gluten-free. With Brio, ice cream can be an anytime snack and a satisfying dessert, or even a nourishing after school treat for kids. If you love ice cream, you’ll be happy to know that Brio loves you back.

Is Brio gluten free?

Yes. And we didn’t stop there. Brio is CERTIFIED gluten free, which means that it has been independently verified for quality, integrity and purity. Brio meets the strict gluten-free standards of the Gluten Intolerance Group, a recognized leader in gluten free certification. Their “Certified Gluten Free” logo is displayed on every carton of Brio. Your peace of mind, health and safety are important to us.

Is Brio non-GMO?

Absolutely! Every ingredient in Brio has been carefully sourced to be non-GMO. We have documentation for each and every one of our ingredients that demonstrates all of our ingredients are not genetically engineered.

Is Brio Kosher?

Brio is certified as Kosher by The Orthodox Union of New York City (OU), the world’s largest kosher certifying agency, known for having one of the strictest kosher standards in the world. Their OU D logo is displayed on each carton of Brio.

Is Brio organic?

The main ingredient in Brio is organic whole milk from pasture-raised cows. There are many other organic ingredients in Brio. They include:

Organic Sea Salt Caramel
Organic Dried Cane Syrup
Organic Agave Nectar
Organic Canola Oil
Organic Sunflower Oil
Organic Coconut Oil
Organic Clarified Butter
Organic Inulin

In fact, 70% to 80% of the ingredients in every carton of Brio are organic!

How is Brio sweetened?

Brio features a unique combination of natural sweeteners that work together to provide a delicious blend that delivers energy and is also low glycemic, meaning it has less impact on blood sugar and insulin levels. We never use corn syrups, erythritol, monk fruit or stevia in Brio. There are absolutely no artificial sweeteners in Brio.
Our sweeteners are organic dried cane syrup, organic agave nectar and non-corn, non-GMO fructose made from sugar cane.

Why does Brio have less saturated fat and cholesterol than ordinary premium ice cream, yet taste so rich and creamy?

As Ron Koss, who led the product development of Brio, likes to say, the team that developed Brio found ingredients that “play well with each other.” In Brio, you’ll find organic virgin coconut oil, organic sunflower oil, organic clarified butter and organic canola oil, which all work together with the natural fats found in our organic whole milk, to provide you with a healthy balance of Omega 3-6-9s and delivering the creaminess you expect from ice cream. Compared with similar flavors of super premium brands, Brio has half the fat, 65 percent less saturated fat and 75 percent less cholesterol!

By the way, our oils are expeller pressed (a mechanical process used to produce quality oils). No solvents or hexane are used, ever!

Tell me about the probiotics used in Brio.

The word probiotics comes from pro and biota, meaning “for life,” and is used to refer to beneficial living bacteria found in yogurt and fermented food. Probiotics live in your gut and can help to keep it healthy. About 70% of your immune system is found in your gut, which is why probiotics may also help your overall immune system.

Ordinary probiotics can’t survive the cold temperatures and harsh environment of the freezer. Brio features probiotics that were created especially for frozen foods. We searched for a long time to find a quality freezer-friendly probiotic for ice cream. After much review, we selected the probiotic strain Ganeden BC30  (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086). The Ganeden company has over 20 peer-reviewed studies demonstrating the safety, efficacy and benefits of this probiotic, their signature probiotic strain. Their research and development facility is one of the most advanced probiotic technological laboratories in the world.

Ganeden has conducted extensive safety studies on Ganeden BC30 and is the only Bacillus that has been granted FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.

In addition, Brio contains prebiotics, a nondigestible food ingredient that promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines. Brio’s prebiotics are from organic inulin, a starchy substance found in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. The organic inulin in Brio is from agave and guar bean fiber.

How many calories are in Brio?

Brio has approximately 25 percent fewer calories than comparable flavors of super premium brands. Brio has just 145 to 150 calories in a serving (4 fluid ounces) – less than you’d find in a serving of fruit-flavored yogurt.

For those who want a convenient grab-and-go option, there are our single serve 3.6 fl. oz. cups. Each one has just 135 – 145 calories. Easy portion control!

How much added sugar is in Brio?

Brio has 10% – 40% less added sugars than many premium ice creams. For example, in a serving of Brio’s Vanilla Caramel, you’ll find 12 grams of added sugar. In comparison, Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby has approximately 22 grams of added sugar!
Every ice cream has naturally occurring sugar found in the lactose in milk and cream. This is not considered added sugar. Brio has 3-4 grams of naturally occurring sugar per serving from our organic whole milk.

Brio features a patented all-natural sweetener blend for sustained energy. There are no artificial sweeteners, no monk fruit, no stevia and no erythritol in Brio.

Brio is low glycemic. Brio’s average GIycemic Index is 40, and our average Glycemic Load is 8 per serving. Brio has protein, fiber and healthy fats which slow down your body’s absorption of sugar. That’s better for your metabolism and your body.

Why is Brio nutrient rich?

Even if you strive to eat well every day, it’s easy to miss important nutrients that your body needs. Kids often are picky or reluctant eaters, and miss out on essentials vitamins and minerals. Teens and college students, busy working people and seniors are also challenged to get all of the needed nutrients every day.

Brio offers a full spectrum of highest quality vitamins and minerals. Brio’s vitamins and minerals include antioxidants (Vitamins A, C and E), electrolytes (including potassium, magnesium and sodium) and all B-vitamins (including B12 and Folic Acid). We also include calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D. There are a total of 24 of these essential micronutrients included in Brio. To help your body maximize its absorption of key fat-soluble vitamins (like Vitamin A and E), Brio is made with healthy Omega 3-6-9 fats. All of our vitamins and minerals are non-GMO and meet organic and Kosher standards. For those with allergies, please note that a strict Allergen Monitoring Program assures the safety of our vitamins and minerals.
