Face it: we all get an urge for something sweet, especially around the holidays. Be smart about how you respond to it, advises fitness and nutrition expert Ashley Petitt, who appeared  on WCIU TV’s “You and Me Today” program to talk about sweet and smart wintertime snacks.

Ashley recommends that you skip the empty calories from candy or cookies, and instead whip up treats that are simple, healthy and satisfying. She showcased a healthy sweet potato smoothie made with Brio ice cream — for a blast of betacarotene and lots of nutritious benefits (including antioxidants, protein, calcium, Omega 3s and more).

It’s just sweet enough to set off that serotonin in the brain, just like a candy bar would, but without the guilt! The Brio and sweet potato combo are also low glycemic, to deliver sustained energy, which is important at this busy time of year.

RECIPE:
Sweet Potato Smoothie
1 scoop Brio Vanilla Caramel frozen dairy dessert, softened
3 ice cubes
½ cup cooked sweet potato, skin included for added fiber scoop of vanilla protein powder or equivalent to15g
1/4 cup unflavored, unsweetened hemp or coconut milk
¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice
¼ tsp ginger, ground
optional: serve with some chopped raw walnuts on top and a dash of nutmeg
Just mix it all together until smooth in a blender!
