Brio Blog: Ice cream for a post-workout food

Most athletes give serious consideration to the food they eat just BEFORE a run workout or race, and have their favorites. Popular choices often include a piece of toast with almond butter or a banana.

But what you eat after your workout is also critically important and helps set the stage for a successful next race or training run. Post workout is the time to restock your body’s stores of glycogen, protein, electrolytes and carbohydrates that were used during exercise.

During your workout, you’ve used energy (glycogen) stored in your muscles. Replenish those glycogen stores with “smart” carbohydrates. As a starting place, “smart” means skipping foods with corn syrups or artificial sweeteners or artificial flavors, and opting instead for those that are low glycemic.

Muscle tissue gets broken down during your work out. The longer and harder the workout, the greater the breakdown. Repair and regenerate new and stronger muscle tissue by supplying your body with high quality complete protein.

And of course, you’ll lose fluids during your workout. Be sure to rehydrate with plenty of liquid and replenish key electrolytes like potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Insist on quality foods. Choose those that are all-natural and non-GMO. Be good to the body that’s been so good to you.

Cora Speck, a 7-time marathon finisher and surfer from Honolulu, HI, recommends Brio.

Ice cream? Yes, if you check out the label, you’ll find that Brio is more than an indulgence. It’s rich in antioxidants, electrolytes and has 6 grams of muscle-building protein. It also contains essential B vitamins like folic acid and B12.

What Cora likes about Brio is that it features an all-natural low glycemic sweetener blend to refuel glycogen stores and keep her energy level steady throughout the rest of the day. Best of all, Brio has only 160 -170 calories and just 6 -7 g of fat. And it’s cool and refreshing.

Remember, smart recovery snacking helps set the stage for improved performance and endurance in the future. Make the most of your workouts with your smart post-workout snack.
